I had just graduated from High School the week before. (Class of '08! Wohoo!~)
My friend Jackson and I had made plans to hang out at his house later that day-
So at about 4 in the afternoon, I went over to his house to watch some movies, play Guitar Hero, and hang out with my buddy.
A couple hours in, my friend Jackson talked me into smoking marijuana.
I'm not going to lie, I was very new to marijuana-
I wasn't even inhaling and was trying to take it slow.
Then he told me to inhale the the smoke and hold it in for 30 seconds at a time...
After that something happened that I never could have predicted in a thousand years.
I Ended Up Having The Worst Dejavu I Had Ever Experienced...
I sprang up from the couch and ran outside.
I had never had a full on panic attack before.
One by one,
the symptoms kicked in.
Heart started pounding... I couldn't breathe... I felt waves of heat crawl up my spine... I started losing feeling in my limbs...
I quickly felt overwhelmed and thought I was going to die…
With my heart pounding into my ears, I thought I was having a heart attack and then the most terrifying thing happened...
I Felt Like I Slipped Out Of Reality...
Everything started to become disconnected and dreamy...
I felt like I was watching myself on a video camera.
It felt as if my eyes were 5 feet above my head and I was watching myself pace back and forth in the darkness.
And when I looked at the street, the light posts, and my friend's car, they all looked like they were from a movie.
Time stopped, and nothing felt real anymore...
The Next Morning...
The next morning, I woke up and felt fine.
My friend had placed a fan next to me and had given me a big glass of cold water the night before trying to calm me down.
That's When I remembered What Had Happened...
I looked up at my friend Jackson and said in pure shame, "I freaked out didn't I?".
He looked back with a sarcastic look and said,
"Yeah dude, big time. You should probably go home now".
I went home and assumed that the weird sensations I experienced were only due to the marijuana and I would never experience them again.
I watching TV at my mom's house when suddenly everything felt strange again and I had yet ANOTHER panic attack...
Once again, as if I was in the movie Groundhog Day, I found myself pacing back and forth in my mom's living room.
And once again, I started to feel out of my body and like everything was a dream.
It was particularly scary because now I was experiencing these strange sensations without having smoked marijuana.
I instantly became convinced I was going insane since I was experiencing the sense of panic and feelings of disconnection without even touching marijuana for days at that point.
I looked online for help, but the best I could find at the time was an audio book that taught me to distract my mind all the time.
I would spend hours and hours playing video games, doing anything I could to keep my mind occupied.
That was absolutely exhausting and it never made the symptoms go away for more than a few hours at a time and eventually it stopped working alltogether.
It turns out, I wasn't alone. After recovering from DPDR and having now personally worked with nearly 5,000 people from around the world suffering with DPDR. I have now come to know that over half of them told me they also tried the same distraction program.
I recently had a client who is a real estate agent and was working 7 days a week because this program told her she needed to distract her mind 24/7 to recover. She was more exhausted than she had ever been. But I hear these stories every single week and have for years.
Distraction is a form of dissociation. It doesn't get to the root of your symptoms.
I then noticed that everyone I was watching on Youtube seemed to all be saying I needed to simply "accept" these sensations and then they would vanish.
That didn't work either.
In fact, the more I tried to "accept" the sensations, the worse I would feel.
I often thought, "How am I supposed to "accept" the most terrifying sensations I have ever experienced?
"Out-Thinking The Symptoms"
Then I came across a few people online who said that the secret to beating these symptoms was to constantly think about them.
The idea was that by intentionally thinking about them, I wouldn't be running from them, so it would help me not be so afraid of them.
That also didn't work.
That's When I finally Cracked The Code...
I decided to try something different...
Instead of trying to use my MIND to overcome depersonalization and derealization, I decided to try using my BODY to overcome them.
I took everything I knew about calming my body and turned it into a technique. I decided to try it out the next time I was experiencing symptoms.
My Symptoms Vanished Before My Very Eyes!
For the first time in a long time, I went a while without experiencing depersonalization, derealization, or any anxiety at all.
